Japanese Method of Multiplication through Lines

Japanese people are very hard working and clever .And most of us acknowledge this fact .Their learning too is different than conventional method taught today in other parts of the world. Many educators from the west have known this powerful content of their teaching methods and started to translate their books .As a result, this powerful and easy technique of multiplication took the world by storm especially in the US and European countries.

Most of the Japanese learnings involves basic shapes and quantitative analysis skill to solve the problem. And after having crossed one such method , I could'nt help but make it a valuble post on my blog under the Maths is Fun section. The below images will teach you Multiplications using Lines   or Japanese multiplication method taught for school kids in Japan.

Lets take an example of two digits multiplication

japanese multiplication
Note : The above image depicts the digits of the multipliers as horizontal and vertical lines. The number of nodes represents a part of the answer. Finally , accumulating all the nodes (numbers), we get the final answer.

Here is another example that involves carry over,

japanese multiplication

Now, finally lets us do the same taking  three digits multiplication
japanese multiplication
Steps in Brief for Japanese multiplication of three digits multiplication

Multiply 312 x 231

Step 1 : Draw horizontal lines with respective to the numbers 3 , 1, 2 from 312
Step 2 : Draw vertical lines with respective to the numbers 2,3,1 from 231
Step 3 : Mark the intersections by the two lines , both horizontal and vertical lines and lets call it as        Nodes
Step 4 : Circle each intersection and write the number of nodes by the side (see image above )
Step 5 : The respective numbers from left to right is the answer. If there are two digits as seen above 10 and 12 , keep the unit digit as such and carry over the tenth digit to the next intersection  .Add them together (see image again) to get the final answer

Therefore,  312 x 231 = 72072
